What do you mean, planning for winter, it’s almost over and I want spring. I’m on the same page about spring, but when I was out helping a neighbor feed his horses, (see picture) I notice how he was doing it and where. Everything was planned out and it made it look really easy. So I asked him why it looked so simple. He said,” I finally decided to plan ahead on how best to feed them in the winter. This got me thinking when I started building our homestead I didn’t plan ahead for winter. Here are some of the things I did wrong.>>> Wood not close to the cabin>>> wood not covered>>> some areas around house not accessible to get the snow blower through>>> where do I cut the kindling? >>> how will I feed the animals in the winter >>> Can I get to the bird feeder easily in the winter. >>> are my driveways slanted right to drive on during the winter >>> During the break up will I have slush in the wrong areas >>> Did I put my gate where it will be easy to open and close during the winter. >>> will I have problems opening doors to the out buildings when it freezes. And those are just to name a few. My point is, we usually build in nice weather and don’t plan ahead for winter. Most of these things I have finally figured out but because I didn’t plan ahead for winter all that much It has cost me time and money. Sit down with your spouse and do some brain storming and you will come up with a number of good ideas to either build or change something before next winter. Right now I’m looking at re-doing some of my previous road work so when it gets icy, I don’t slide off the driveway when I’m stopped. Yes my friends , I came to a complete stop to open the gate and it was really slick even though I was on the level front to back, side to side was slanted. As soon as I started to move forward, the back end of the truck slid off into some deep snow. I just hate putting on chains in the deep snow when I only have to go another couple hundred feet to get to the cabin. Yes, homesteading is work but it should fun also and while planning ahead it won’t be nearly as much work. It’s getting close to crunch time for me to move a whole lot of stuff up here to the homestead and have some moving sales down at our flat lander place. My burn season will be coming to an end around April, depending on the weather so It’s ,” Hi Ho Hi Ho it’s off to work I go. May the sun shine in your life and the dew refresh your souls, and may God bless you beyond measure. Bob & Carol
