How to Survive a Mini Ice Age after a Massive Volcanic Eruption

How to Survive a Mini Ice Age after a Massive Volcanic Eruption

Years ago a movie came out about a family of three who had mistakenly been living in their nuclear fallout shelter for a couple of decades. Through a comical series of events the family emerged into a society that had moved on without them. But they emerged healthy, having used their own food, breathed their own recycled air, and ensured their own water supply for the entire time.

Of the over 600 volcanoes in the world, about 40 are super volcanoes, and these are the culprits that are likely to have caused the last Ice Age.  If you are anywhere near the site when the volcano erupts, you will not survive. The blast will literally incinerate hundreds of square miles around the volcano before it wreaks havoc on the planet.

If it is a “mini ice age,” however, some people will survive. Even in primitive times people who were well placed on the planet near a means to access food, water and shelter did survive to continue the human race.

So what are the chances of surviving a mini ice age? Survival first depends on location. You must be far enough away from the blast to avoid lava and the pyroclastic cloud. If you are above ground, you will not survive. If you are below ground in a facility like our mythical TV family, you may. It is best to be far away!

New-WeaponVolcanoes generally give some warning before they erupt. If you live near one and it starts to become active, add the following to your emergency kits:

.  A good respirator and goggles for every member of the family;

.  Flashlights for every member of the family;

.  Rolls of plastic and duct tape (wherever you land, if you are in the middle of ash fall, you should seal all the openings);

.  First aid kit and medications;

.  Food, water and water purification equipment; and

.  Layers of clothing to optimize warmth (including hoods for everyone).

If possible, set up a greenhouse. Plant and store non-hybrid seeds. The best are wheat, soybeans, rye, barley, alfalfa, and corn (all of which are excellent sources of nutrients). Though high levels of ultraviolet light may stunt these plants’ growth somewhat, they’d still produce food;

In preparation for a possible evacuation:

.  Practice your evacuation plan with your family;

.  Research suggestions for evacuation sites and choose one that is in a safe location;

.  Keep an extra disaster kit for your entire family and gas in your vehicle;

.  Keep  your vehicle fully gassed at all times; and

  1. Before leaving, throw in as many shelf-stable supplies as you can.

Your priority is getting away from lava and ash. Once the ash begins to fall it will permeate every crack and crevice it can find. Seal your car hood, doors and windows in every way possible (while maintaining the ability to drive).

Assuming you arrive at a safe location, life will likely be radically different for some time. Rationing, martial law, and conscription are all possible, depending on the extent of the damage to infrastructure and other systems.

When chaos reigns at this level, it is best to keep a low profile and make no waves. Your goal is to protect your family and get them through this.

If you find youreself out in the cold wilderness without matches or a lighter, you can still light a fire, or you can impress your friends with this little trick.

You will need  an aluminum can, a chocolate bar, a towel , cloth or paper, tinder and wood.

Step 1: Rub the chocolate all over the bottom of the can.

Step 2: Wipe the chocolate off with a towel,cloth or paper, rubbing and polishing as you wipe. Do not eat the chocolate after it’s been in contact with the aluminum- the residue may be toxic.

Step 3: Repeat this process several times until the bottom of the can shines.The can has been polished enough when it shines and reflects like a mirror.

Step 4: Angle the can in direct sunlight.Find a direct ray of sunlight and angle the bottom of the can so that it reflects the sun’s rays.Place your tinder- dry leaves, sticks or paper in a spot where you want your fire.

Step 6: Reflect the concentrated beam off the can and onto the tinder, similar to how you might with a magnifying glass and a leaf.

Step 7: Hold the beam on the tinder until you see smoke. As soon as the tinder starts to burn add wood to build your fire around it.
