Crafting a makeshift spare key is a lot easier than you think.The video below shows that it only takes about 5 minutes and will get you prepared.
Begin by simply holding the key over a candle or lighter flame until the metal is blackened.
Then place a piece of scotch tape over the top of the blackened key and rub your finger across it so that the color gets picked up. Make sure you get all the grooves into the tape.
The next step is to stick the piece of tape onto a piece of metal like the aluminum from a soda can or a door sign. Then use a pair of scissors to cut out the shape of the key. Now you have a temporary spare key that can actually open up your door.

Charlie here. Seems this video is similar of another video seen about a month ago on Youtube. Who was much more professional.
But flipping the soda bottle off nonchalantly was stupid. I don’t like guys that get sloppy or smartass when instructing. It shows a characteristic of being SLOPPY.

The hardware store will make you a spare key for about 50 cents. And you won’t burn your fingers with this nonsense.
Right. How is a key made from an aluminum can going to turn the lock on a house? It would just twist and do nothing.
Why would you do this when any hardware store can do it for you (and give you a key that will actually turn a lock) for a very reasonable price.
This video is dumb, this wouldn’t work as described, and is of no benefit to you if you lock yourself out of your house.
You’re much better off with the knowledge that almost ANY sliding glass door can be lifted out of the frame from outside.
There you go, now you can get inside. Just don’t drop the door.
