The Survival Buzz #196: Organizing Prep Purchases – Again!

Welcome to this week’s Survival Buzz with an update on my own preps plus news and announcements from the Backdoor Survival blog.

For the past few weeks, I have been purchasing this and that and stashing the items in a closed off room.  Who has not done that from time to time?  This week I decided it was time to start putting things in their proper place so that is what I did.  It probably took more time to organize after the fact than if I had done it from the get go but heck, at least it is done.

Here are some the preps that arrived by Mr. UPS recently:

Mobile Washer:  I use the mobile washer at my Washington home weekly for one thing or another.  It is especially useful for pre-washing messy grimy rags.  Alas, I left it there so I need another one for my desert home.

50 feet of paracord: I have paracord in all of my emergency kits but wanted some to use around the house.  This stuff is so useful for so many things. See 44 Fantastic Uses of Paracord for Prepping and Survival.

Another Ultra Fire Mini Cree:  These are cheap, sturdy flashlights (usually less than $4) and you can never have enough.

2 cans of instant milk and a “milk mixing pitcher”:  The pitcher was a bonus so I basically got it for free.  I needed the milk to add to my DIY Biscuit Mix and also as an addition to my food storage pantry.

Large bottle of red food coloring:  This is used to periodically test that the black filters in my Royal Berkey are working properly.  This huge bottle was only slightly more than the cost of a tiny bottle at the supermarket.  When is the last time you performed a red food dye test on your Berkey>

Mini LED flashlights:  I am adding these mini LED flashlights to all of my key rings  Note that I am replacing the included rings with my own that are fashioned from tie wrap (also called zip ties).  I was lucky enough to find these red mini-LED flashlights for the same price as the black ones(about $4 for all 10).

In addition to these items, I picked up another 25 pounds of pintos and 25 pounds of white rice at Costco.  And finally, I found large box of matches for $1 at, where else? The Dollar Store.

Still left to do are packaging of the beans and rice, and also filling those 2 large, 160 gallon water tanks I purchased last month.

That about covers it for me this week, prep-wise.  Now for a few  announcements.

The Final Word

With Thanksgiving coming up, we are all very busy so I am going to keep things short this week.  On Thursday, Shelly and I are going to spend a quiet day alone, cooking, eating, and enjoying a glass or two of the sparkly.
