Store Water With LifeStack Storage Containers + Giveaway

Finding the space to store water and food for emergency purposes can be dilemma.  The reality is that not everyone has a large pantry, basement or cellar where buckets, cases and cans of  food and water can be stored away, out of sight and yet accessible if and when they are needed.

That is why when my blogging colleague, Bernie Carr, the Apartment Prepper, asked if I wanted to introduce you to the LifeStack Storage Container and participate in a group giveaway, I jumped at the chance.

What is the Lifestack Storage Container?

The LifeStack is a one-gallon stackable, interlocking bottle made of food-grade, BPA free plastic. Made in the USA, they are perfect for storing water or the short term storage of bulk foods such as rice, grains or beans. They stack every which way and can be hidden away under sofas, behind dressers, and just about anywhere.

When I first heard about Lifestack Storage Containers I was immediately interested on how they would work.  Living in an apartment presents challenges for water and food storage due to limited space and I am always looking for solutions.

What are LifeStack Storage Containers?

They are watertight, stackable 1 gallon containers that store food and water.  The containers are BPA free, and can be filled with either water or storable bulk items such as sugar, salt etc.

The plastic is lightweight but durable.  The containers are opaque and therefore protects from light.

Review

I received four storage containers for review.  I filled all of them with water from the tap.  I sealed each of them tightly.

These containers can be very handy and useful for storing water.  I placed them vertically in various tight spots, such as next to the refrigerator, between furniture etc.  They fit well and stacked on each other, maximizing the space.

I also tried storing them horizontally under the bed. I closed the lid tightly.  To make sure I can clearly spot any leaks, I placed a piece of paper and a towel underneath.  After a few hours, I noticed a few water leaks on the paper.  I did check with my contact at lifestackstorage.com and he indicated “upon further testing and use I discovered that if I tightened the lids as tightly as possible (even when they feel they’re on tightly, they can still be tightened down even more), the leakage stopped.”

I have found in other tests that most water containers leak when stored on their side, and therefore I always recommend storing water in an upright position.

If you were storing solid items such as oats, salt or sugar, then there would be no issues of leakage if you were to store them horizontally.

Other than that, I found that Lifestack Storage Containers are ideal for storing in tight spaces.  They are sturdy and stack well.  Store water or other solid bulk items in the Lifestack Storage containers and keep them upright in a cool, dark place to protect the contents.  The containers connect together and are very thin, allowing you to store several containers in a tight space.

I think Lifestack Storage Containers are a great storage option for anyone who lives in a small space such as apartments, condos, tiny homes or RVs.

One Important Consideration

Given that I have not tested the LifeStack myself, I am recommending them as a solution for water and short term food storage only.  It is my understanding that the lid does not include a gasket so there is no assurance that any food stored inside will be impervious to air or tiny pests.

On the other hand, the LifeStack is an excellent solution for storing water when space is limited.

The Final Word

I know from first hand experience that finding space to store your preps can be difficult if not downright depressing.  My own home only has one bedroom and is quite tiny so I have every spare nook and cranny stuffed with storage containers of one type or another.  Even my cast iron skillets are stored under the sofa!

Suncast RB50D 50-Gallon Rain Barrel:  A rain barrel is a great way to collect water for, well, a rainy day.  This is the rain barrel I own.  The instructions indicate that it must be dumped regularly to prevent algae formation but since I will be using this “free” water in the garden, it will get replenished regularly by Mother Nature.  That said,  I am definitely going to keep an eye on things.

Potable Aqua Water Treatment Tablets: Potable Aqua Water Purification Tablets make questionable water bacteriologically suitable to drink. Easy to use and the water is ready to drink in 30 minutes. One 50 tablet bottle treats 25 quarts of water.

NALGENE BPA-Free Water Bottle:  These $8 water bottles have served me well.  I fill them up with water from my Royal Berkey and keep one bedside, one at my desk and another in the bathroom.  Keep in mind that price-wise, some colors will be more expensive so if color does not matter, go with the cheapest (currently the green version).

DryTec Calcium Hypochlorite, 1-Pound:  This is 68% Calcium Hypochlorite.  As of this writing, the price is under $10 with free shipping.  I purchased Ultima Pool Shock which is 73% Calcium Hypochlorite.  For more information, read How to Use Pool Shock to Purify Water.

Black Berkey Primer Gizmo – Less than $20:  Okay, that is my name for it.  This device makes back-flushing a Black Berkey Filter a cinch. Following a disaster, when you are depending on your filters for clean water, you may not have running water.  If you have a Berkey, you are going to want one of these inexpensive devices.  For more information, see The Survival Buzz #160: Maintaining Black Berkey Filters.
