Prepping and Self-Sufficiency are Peas in a Pod | Backdoor Survival

In analyzing the most popular articles of 2015, I was more than a little bit surprised to learn that the most viewed articles last year were mostly related to self-sufficiency (DIY) and essential oils.  Not all but most.

At first, I found this discouraging because after all is said and done, this is a preparedness website site.  Upon reflection, however, it all made sense.  There really is no hard and fast line that differentiates between prepping and self-sufficiency.  As a matter of fact, prepping and self-sufficiency are peas in a pod!

Prepping and Self-Sufficiency are Peas in a Pod | Backdoor Survival

Here is one definition of Prepping:

The practice of making active preparations for a possible catastrophic disaster or emergency, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies.

“Prepping is a way of life and there is always something new to learn, tasks to do, and gear to purchase.”

And of Self-Sufficiency:

Having the ability to supply one’s own or its own needs without external assistance.

As with prepping and homesteading, preparedness and self-sufficiency go hand on hand.

Where do essential oils fit it?  Using essential oils frees us from the shackles of chemical laden first aid products as well as big pharma.  They give us the ability to treat minor ailments naturally.  Using various plant based oils also gives us insight into the use of plants, barks, flowers, and herbs that may be infused in an oil or even vinegar to provide healing qualities when there is nothing else available.

Brenda asked:

I’m new to essential oils, so I joined Spark Naturals Oil of the Month club.

My question is, when you say so many drops, do you mean from the top of the bottle or do you take the tops off and use a dropper. I’ve never been clear on this.

This is such a common question, that I am sharing my response here.

That is an excellent question, Brenda, and I will do my best to answer it for you.

Both methods are correct and a matter of preference. I prefer to take off the included dropper (its official name is “orifice”) because using it is difficult to control. Instead I use a regular eye dropper or one of those accessory droppers you can buy to replace the regular top. If you decide to toss the orifice, make sure that the next time you use the bottle you remember to check first. Been there done that and lost an entire bottle of Peppermint EO that way.

Most of the time I take off the orifice and replace it with an accessory dropper. As I recall, you can purchase 5 in a package for about $2 on the Spark Naturals site.

One other thing.  I always wrap a rubber band around the bottles that do not have a dropper.  That way I won’t accidently dump the entire bottle on myself, into my diffuser, or into whatever concoction I happen to be making at the time.

In the event you are curious, last week I put up a new page describing the Spark Naturals Oil of the Month club, including the 2016 line up.  This is the best deal out there on essential oils!

Did you ever see those cool vintage posters that the government put out decades ago, encouraging people to become more self-reliant? Now, it is illegal in many places to put a vegetable garden in your front yard or to collect the rain from your downspouts. What happened in the past 50 years to cause this change?

There has been a lot of talk about hackers monkeying around in the power grid, but now, for the first time, our fears have been realized. Hackers in the Ukraine attacked substations with a virus that caused a power surge, leaving half of the Ivano-Frankivsk region in the dark.

George Soros is not a good person, but when he makes a prediction, it is worth listening to. According to Soros, the world economy is crumbling in a manner similar to 2008, and trillions of dollars have already vanished.

This has been a very active week for earthquakes. Oklahoma has had numerous earthquakes of over 4.0 in magnitude, and the Pacific Northwest is shaking too, with a period of 427 continuous tremors.

As  I mentioned last week, not everyone has the time or interest to visit Facebook.  I know that I limit the time I spend there to an hour a week, at most.  On the other hand, I do spend a considerable amount of time posting to the BDS Facebook page.  Even so, FB does not always “show” fans my posts.

For your discernment, here are the best prepping, survival, and homesteading articles from my colleagues in the Professional Prepared Bloggers Group.  I hope you enjoy and learn from them.

The Final Word

As I am writing (current time is 2:15PM on January 8th). the power is out.  I called the power company and we may be on our own for up to 24 hours.  Not to worry, except for the need to get this article uploaded to my servers.  Shelly and I plan to plug in our “survival font module” and go about our life with nary a hiccup.

Don’t you just love it when you know you can still cook, eat, read, and stay warm with plenty of lighting even when there is no power?  All that, plus we can play games and color in our coloring books.  With any kind of luck, crews will restore power and you will be reading this on time.  Otherwise?  Tomorrow is another day.

I just love being a prepper!

Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

TaoTronics Collapsible Lantern:  This TaoTronics Lantern is collapsible, super bright, and water resistant.  It is powered by 3 AAA batteries that will provide brightness for 40 hours. To use this lantern, just pull it open; there are no power switches to mess with.

Glass Droppers, Pack of 6: I bought a package of these and loved them.  When I went to re-order, I accidentally ordered plastic instead glass droppers.  Learn from my mistake.  The price is the same so get the glass ones.

Diamond GreenLight Kitchen Matches – 3 Pack (Strike anywhere):  Our local supermarket in Friday Harbor told us that they do not stock the strike-anywhere matches because they self-combust.  Urban legend or CYA?  Who knows.  Amazon sells them.

Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath:  The hallmark book, by award winning journalist Ted Koppel, will hopefully educate the sheeple and motivate them to embrace the message of preparedness.  For the rest of us, there is much to learn about the state of preparedness, or lack thereof, at the highest levels of our government.  Read more:  Prepper Book Festival 10: Lights Out by Ted Koppel.

Balance (Angie’s Extreme Stress Menders Volume 1): This is the latest book to feed my thirst for coloring books.  I must have spent an hour looking at various coloring books before settling on this one.  I am almost done with the first book I ordered and it was nice because it had a wide variety of designs that gave me a good opportunity to decide what I liked, and what I didn’t.  For me, it is the floral design and mandalas that keep my mind focused to the point that stress just melts away!

Ticket to Ride:  When it comes to board games, this is my favorite.  (It helps that I usually win.)  This is fun for the entire family.  Warning, you and your gift recipient will become addicted and will often ask the question:  Want to play train aka “ticket to ride”?

Now Foods Peaceful Sleep Oil Blend: This budget priced oil has done wonders for my sleep.  It is a blend of Orange, Tangerine, Lavender, Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, and Sandalwood.  I am using 30 drops to 1 ounce of carrier oil.  My preference is BDS Simple Salve (that you can make yourself).  You could also try making a room spray by adding 30 drops to 1 oz. of witch hazel in a a spray bottle.
