A noted Chinese theorist on modern warfare, Mr. Chang Mengxiong, compared China’s form of fighting to “a Chinese boxer with a keen knowledge of vital body points who can bring an opponent to his knees with a minimum of movements”. It is like key acupuncture points in ancient Chinese medicine. Puncture one vital point and the whole anatomy is affected. If America ever goes to war with China, say, over Taiwan, then America should be prepared for the following “acupuncture points” in its anatomy to be “punctured”. Each of the vital points can bring America to its knees with a minimum of effort.
Electro-magnetic Pulse (EMP) attack
China and Russia are two potential US adversaries that have the capability for this kind of attack. An EMP attack can either come from an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), a long-range cruise missile, or an orbiting satellite armed with a nuclear or non-nuclear EMP warhead. A nuclear burst of one (or more) megaton some 400 kilometers over central United States (Omaha, Nebraska) can blanket the whole continental US with electro-magnetic pulse in less than one second.
An EMP attack will damage all electrical grids on the US mainland. It will disable computers and other similar electronic devices with microchips. Most businesses and industries will shut down. The entire US economy will practically grind to a halt. Satellites within line of sight of the EMP burst will also be damaged, adversely affecting military command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR). Land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles will be rendered unserviceable in their silos. Anti-ballistic missile defenses will suffer the same fate. In short — total blackout. And American society as we know it will be thrown back to the Dark Ages.
Of course, the US may decide to strike first, but China and Russia now have the means of striking back with submarine-launched ballistic missiles with the same or even more devastating results. But knowing China’s strategy of “active defense”, when war with the US becomes imminent, China will surely not allow itself to be targeted first. It will seize the initiative as mandated by its doctrine by striking first.
China has repeatedly announced that it will not be the first to use nuclear weapons. But as an old Chinese saying goes: “There can never be too much deception in war.” If it means the survival of the whole Chinese nation that is at stake, China will surely not allow a public statement to tie its hands and prevent it from seizing the initiative. As another saying goes: “All is fair in love and war.”
China’s People’s Liberation Army has a specialized unit dedicated to launching cyberattacks, and its main target is the United States.
U.S. intelligence agencies warn that China operates on a scale so sophisticated it could bring down the entire American electrical grid. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper warned the Senate Armed Services Committee in September that the Chinese have the ability to launch “a massive Armageddon-like attack against our infrastructure.”
China has achieved a technological breakthrough that could help introduce pulse weapons to the People’s Liberation Army’s arsenal, reports the Global Times, a tabloid under the auspices of the Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily.
According to the report, the Xian Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has successfully developed a third-generation X-ray pulsar simulation source. The technology, which can create an X-ray pulsar source in X-ray tubes to generate arbitrary waveform pulses, officially passed evaluation tests on Jan. 17.
The evaluation committee found that the creation’s performance indicators were at an advanced international level and concluded that it is an advanced technology with original and practical applications that could lead to important economic and social benefits.
An X-ray pulsar consists of a magnetized neutron star in orbit with a normal stellar companion and is a type of binary star system. They are a class of astronomical objects that are X-ray sources displaying strict periodic variations in X-ray intensity with ranges that can vary from microseconds to several minutes.
As a natural beacon, X-ray pulsars have important applications in aerospace, astronomy, science and engineering. In terms of military applications, simulated X-ray pulsars may help China develop new weapons that can challenge America’s dominance in the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons sphere.
Traditional non-nuclear EMPs weapons produce a short burst of electromagnetic energy to disrupt or damage electronic equipment. Nuclear EMP weapons, which have been dubbed “the second atomic bomb,” have a much wider range of impact as they produce an abrupt pulse of electromagnetic radiation resulting from a nuclear explosion. The electromagnetic pulse from non-nuclear EMP weapons come from within the weapon, while nuclear weapons generate EMP as a secondary effect. In terms of military applications, a nuclear EMP would be delivered via a nuclear warhead detonated hundreds of kilometers above the Earth’s surface.
Easily remedied and immediately preventable for exactly ZERO cost. Just take the damned things OFF control by the internet and keep them all autonomous, just as was done for a half century. When power plant, or water plant or gas transmission plant “A” needs more they just call up “B” and Joe six pack goes out and MANUALLY turns a valve or switch so to whatever is needed. When you control everything “in house” there can be NO threat from outside, and for a lousy 2 billion dollars, which is lunch money in D C, the ENTIRE grid can be protected from an EMP attack. Of course this will not happen until we get smacked real good, but then it will be too late, and we will be living in the horse and buggy days again. Russia and China, on the other hand, have been protecting their grids for YEARS. Stupid is as stupid does.
As far as I know, the “M.A.D. policy” is still in effect. (mutually assured destruction) I don’t think Russia or China would try it, but N. Korea or Iran, definitely. The result would be the same; they would be reduced to radioactive rubble!
Only bad thing is that if the suicidal N Korea or Iran pulls off a successful strike, it is too late for us, the damage is done, and we are vulnerable to attack by EVERYBODY. Only good defense against this is either to destroy ALL of N Korea and Iran’s missile systems beforehand or position our defenses to knock down any missile they launch the SECOND it leaves the pad regardless of WHERE it is. The best defense is a good offense.
