[topic]CANBERRA, Australia—Alistair Coe MLA, the youngest member of the ACT Legislative Council, said it was wonderful to have Shen Yun Performing Arts performing in Australia, showcasing 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance and music.
Mr. Coe attended the opening night performance of the New York-based performing arts company, playing at the Canberra Theatre on April 17.
“It’s spectacular,” Mr. Coe said of the performance.
He said he particularly enjoyed the opening scene An Era Begins, calling it “very powerful.”
In this piece, as the curtain opens, China’s glorious civilization is flourishing, and a battalion of celestial soldiers drum in preparation for a battle between good and evil.
How the Monkey King came To Be was another notable piece for Mr. Coe he said. The Monkey King is the central character in China’s classic novel Journey to the West. Born out of a rock, he has magical powers that allow him to travel freely between Heaven and Earth. Monkey wreaks havoc in Heaven until the Buddha traps him in his palm.
“I think that Monkey King scene was superb,” he said.
Primarily known for being the world’s best classical Chinese dance company, the company also boasts award-winning soloists. Mr. Coe said he enjoyed the tenors and the soprano, saying they were fantastic. “It is really a wonderful demonstration of the Chinese culture,” he said.
Shen Yun Performing Arts was established in 2006 with a mission to revive China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture—much of which has been destroyed under 60 years of communist rule in China. The company “creates an all-new production every year that seeks to offer the audience an experience it will always remember,” states Shen Yun’s website.
Mr. Coe said: “Shen Yun each year comes back, and it was even better than 12 months earlier, so it’s wonderful, it really is.
“I think what makes Shen Yun so special is it bridges 5,000 years of history. [It] does so in a very contemporary and modern way, and does so with so much enthusiasm and energy, and at the same time still preserves many nutritious elements of Chinese culture.
“I think it is exciting, it’s wonderful. It’s a pretty superb demonstration of the Chinese culture.”
Mr. Coe said that he would like to recommend the show to his colleagues and friends, and say that “it is something quite educational as well as being very entertaining.”
In conclusion, Mr. Coe said it was the fourth time he has had the privilege to see Shen Yun, and “each time the choreography was actually superb, the … energy, and of course, the orchestra, which we can’t see, down the pit, was wonderful as well.”
