(Before It's News)

[topic]CHICAGO—Among the appreciative audience seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company at the Civic Opera House opening night of the company’s tour was Tim Goodall, who was seeing the company for the first time. “I thought it was outstanding,” he said.

President of the Chicago Chapter for Product Development and Management Association at Motorola, Mr. Goodall was impressed by the company’s mission to present dance pieces telling of China’s long history.

“I think it’s difficult to capture 5,000 years of Chinese history but [Shen Yun] seems to do a great job … knowing those stories, it makes you more interested to learn the fuller, richer story behind each performance,” he said.

Along with the story-based dances depicting China’s history, Shen Yun dancers perform ethnic dances, giving a flavor of some of the more than 50 ethnicities in the country.

“I have been impressed with the diversity and number of different performances within the overall show,” Mr. Goodall said.

“I think all the pieces are outstanding, I think it is a great mix of the different stories that are told.”

In particular, Mr. Goodall enjoyed the dance Joyful Little Monks. The mischievousness of the young monks depicted reminded him of his own three boys.

Mr. Goodall was also impressed with the high-tech backdrops that are coordinated with the movement onstage, and also mentioned the songs interspersed between the dances.

“I think it is outstanding,” he said.

“I’d not heard opera in Chinese where I’ve heard it in many other languages, so it was beautiful to hear those Chinese solo performances as well as the words that told the story behind them.”

Not only the music itself, but the lyrics made an impression on him.

“The subtitles helped me understand the words … it came through as just a very beautiful expression of song combined with a great message with it.”

“I think each song had its kind of own theme … so with the baritone performer, really … talking about the promise at the beginning of creation, and so I think as that was repeated three times. It’s helping to reinforce the importance of that theme.”
