NEW YORK—Michelle Bloom, a regular at theaters in New York City and Los Angeles, described Shen Yun Performing Arts’ unique appeal after watching the opening night performance at Lincoln Center Wednesday night, April 18.

Shen Yun, based in New York, revives 5,000 years of Chinese culture through classical Chinese and ethnic and folk dance.

Ms. Bloom is a promoter for Special Events of New York and Los Angeles, which works on diverse events from the Tribeca Film Festival to Cirque du Soliel.

“I have a very good background in the arts and performing arts business, and this was absolutely amazing,” said Ms. Bloom of Shen Yun. “It’s cultural, that’s what sets it apart. They have their own genre.”

Shen Yun brings together the world’s best classical Chinese dancers. Classical Chinese dance is a dance form that “carries the essence of Chinese cultural expression in its movements, postures, and aesthetics,” according to the Shen Yun website. Each pose is intricate and precise and is meant to express the dancer’s inner expression. Jumps, spins, and flips have also been a part of the form for thousands of years, preceding acrobatics.

“Beautiful,” said Ms. Bloom, who trained in ballet for many years, taught dance, and has also done choreography. “I saw some movements, I was like ‘Oh that’s a stag-leap. That’s a leap. This is a jete. This is a chaines. This a tour jete.’ I saw everything and I was like blown away. Very beautiful. The colors, the graphics … absolutely amazing. I was blown away. Nobody else can do that.”

With Ms. Bloom’s extensive dance and performing arts background, the phrase “It’s different from anything I’ve ever seen,” takes on another meaning. “The show was absolutely amazing,” she added. “It’s very beautiful. It’s impressive because it’s unique. It’s not like anything else … this is unique because it has Chinese authenticity. It talks about history. It talks about the culture. And that’s what I like, because I want to learn about what’s going on in Chinese culture and that’s why I’m here.”

Sherry Dalana, who works in Finance, brought Ms. Bloom for her birthday. Ms. Dalana’s comments also focused primarily on how different Shen Yun is from anything she has seen before. “It was amazing. Very spectacular, very different from what I’ve been to. Very unique. Different, very different. I enjoyed it.”

Ms. Bloom will be bringing a group of friends for her birthday to Shen Yun’s Friday evening performance at Lincoln Center. “It’s so special,” she said. “It’s very special.”
