[topic]MELBOURNE, Australia—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company drew an enthusiastic audience to Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on Saturday, April 14.
The New York-based company is renowned as the leader of classical Chinese dance and music designed to revive China’s five millennia culture through a collection of legendary, traditional, ethnic and contemporary stories.
Valentina Dobric, who has a background in singing opera, was in the audience enjoying the matinee performance. She recently completed a Diploma in Costume Design and is in her second year studying for a Bachelor degree in Fashion Design.
“I think it’s magnificent,” she said of Shen Yun. “The performers were just beautiful. They brought so many beautiful things here, and they’re well trained. The costumes are an absolutely divine, the whole package, the music and the dance … I’m speechless, it’s gorgeous.”
As an opera singer, Ms. Dobric commented on the three vocalists who sing in the bel canto style, an Italian vocal style that prevailed throughout most of Europe during the 18th century, performed in Chinese by the two tenors and soprano in Shen Yun.
“They are lovely I think, beautiful voices,” said Ms. Dobric.
Shen Yun also features a full orchestral ensemble with erhu virtuoso Xiaochun Qi accompanied by pianist Xin Lian. The erhu, an ancient two-stringed Chinese instrument, emits soulful melodies that listeners find mesmerising. Like Ms. Dobric, many have never heard it before, but they were touched nonetheless: “Lovely, I enjoyed [it] so much, it was just beautiful, beautiful music. I don’t know what you call the instrument that the lady played but that was just like heaven,” said Ms. Dobric referring to the erhu. “I loved the songs and I loved the sound of the instrument it’s just … I felt like I’m in a different world, it’s beautiful.”
Ms. Dobric also commented on the costumes: “the colours the shapes and they, of course, brought their tradition into it. It’s just magnificent how they put all colours [together] and under the lights it works so beautifully. Lovely.”
In concluding, Ms. Dobric urged; “People, don’t waste time! Come to see this, this is really worth to see. This is just beautiful, absolutely beautiful … come!”
