AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performed their first show in New Zealand at the ASB Theatre, in Auckland, on Friday, April 20. In the audience taking in the opening night was retired gold medal Olympian and founder of the Halberg trust, Sir Murray Halberg and his wife, Lady Halberg.

Sir Murray said he had a fair idea of what Chinese culture was like, but he said Shen Yun was “absolutely stunning.”

Lady Halberg was likewise impressed saying, “The costuming was just a feast for the eyes.”

New York-based Shen Yun was founded in 2006, and has three performance companies and orchestras traveling the world with one mission: to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture after more than 60 years of communist rule in China threatened to destroy it, says Shen Yun’s website.

“I appreciated it as much as anything coming from a sporting background,” said Sir Murray, “The athleticism and the obvious practice and to perfect a lot of that movement, structure, I thought it was very well done, I applaud them for that.”

According to the Shen Yun website Classical Chinese dance is grounded in 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, and is a dance art form built upon a deep foundation of traditional aesthetics. Classical Chinese dance is rich with expressive power.

“The delicacy and the grace and deportment of the young ladies, I just felt they conveyed that poise, just beautiful,” said Lady Halberg.

“It’s just incredible, we loved every minute of it,” said Sir Murray.

Shen Yun Performing Arts, based in New York, tours the world on a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture. Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performs in Auckland’s ASB Theatre April 20-22.
