[topic]CHICAGO—“Choreography, lovely—maybe five stars. Costumes—five stars. Music—exquisite,” said Maria Gebhard, co-founder of DanceArt, speaking of the Shen Yun performance at Chicago’s Civic Opera House, July 7.
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts returned to Chicago for two performances after its sold-out performances there in April.
Shen Yun’s mission is to bring 5,000 years of Chinese culture to the world through traditional Chinese music and dance.
Having trained in culture and the arts, Ms. Gebhard could appreciate Shen Yun’s mission. She has studied classical languages and literature at the doctoral level. She also founded DanceArt, which offers programs customized to the needs of children, particularly in at-risk communities, according to its website.
“It was a beautifully integrated opportunity to learn about culture and history, and that is what brought me here tonight,” she said.
Speaking of the dancers, Ms. Gebhard said: “Technically they are magnificent. The classical dancing and the form and the dancers are to be applauded.”
Classical Chinese dance is known for its technical difficulty, including spins, leaps and tumbling moves (gymnastics and acrobatics originate from this form of dance). It is also known for its exceedingly expressive nature.
“Classical dance is in fact comprehensive, and I think that technically and emotionally, the dancers are very, very inspiring,” she said.
To sum up her experience, Ms. Gebhard said, “Everyone, both musically and professionally, is very, very authentic, and that is the best compliment, so I feel that we are receiving a lot tonight.”
