The BTE website is not about politics, except some when it comes to discussions about funding the Enterprise program. So if you want a political site or blog, this is not it. However, I inadvertently stepped into politics a little by writing in the last post about the Cold War. I wrote, “We were in a clash of civilizations, and we had to prove our civilization was the right one for others to want to emulate.”
To clarify, by civilization here I was not referring simply to the US. I was referring to the entire “free world”, a phrase often used back in those days. It was the free world vs. communism and no one knew who would win. Half the world lived under communist totalitarian systems, and the leaders of those countries declared that the world would one day be completely communist. Stalin and Mao murdered more of their citizens than any dictators in history. We had good reasons to worry.
So freedom-loving people around the world – including many who were forced to live in the communist countries – hoped that communism would one day be recognized as the awful system that it was.
Fortunately communism has mostly collapsed now. The Soviet Union is history, and communism in China is mostly in name only. (Fascism might be a better name for the system in China now, with the corrupt connections between many government officials and the capitalists. But as bad as this is, the system today is still much, much better than when Mao ruled China.)
