Space Shuttle Endeavour will continue its journey across the US today (September 20), departing Houston at about 7 a.m. (8 a.m. EDT) atop its Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA). Today’s flight will take Endeavour to Edwards Air Force Base (EAFB) in California, due to arrive around Noon.
After this morning’s departure, Endeavour is planned to make low flyovers of Clear Lake and NASA’s Johnson Space Center, and then one more flyover of Houston before heading west. The SCA will then carry Endeavour on to an Austin flyover near the Texas State Capitol building between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. and then continue on to Biggs Army Air Field for refueling at around 8:30 a.m.
From there, the SCA will depart at around 11 a.m. and conduct low-level flyovers of the White Sands Missile Range and NASA’s White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico, as well as Tucson, Arizona. Tucson’s flyover should occur at around 12:15 p.m. depending on launch and flight conditions. The SCA and Endeavour should arrive at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at EAFB shortly thereafter.
After an overnight stay at EAFB, the SCA will carry Endeavour north to Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, then south, making a pass over NASA’s Ames Research Center, Vandenberg Air Force Base and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) before heading to Los Angeles, landing at LAX around Noon PDT.
After an arrival ceremony, Endeavour will be unloaded from atop the SCA and docked at a hangar for a few weeks before making the parade route through Inglewood and Los Angeles to its final destination, the California Science Center on October 13.
Weather conditions could still play a factor in the flight times and route, and officials said some flyovers could be either delayed or canceled.
