Today marks the beginning of World Space Week, a celebration of the contributions of space, science and technology.

World Space Week was originally declared by the United Nations Generally Assembly resolution back in December 1999.

The week runs from October 4 through October 10, coinciding with special historical space exploration dates.

On October 4, 1957, the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched. Ten years later, on October 10, 1967, the Outer Space Treaty was first signed, which as of today includes over 100 countries.

Over 300 events in 40 nations were registered on the World Space Week web site, and event organizers include SUPARCO, UK Space Agency and Space Foundation.

SUPARCO, Pakistan’s space agency, is planning celebrations in 10 major cities of Pakistan. UK Space Agency is planning to do daily tweet-ups on space subjects, while Space Foundation is holding several events across the U.S.

Space Foundation said that World Space Week is the largest annual space event on Earth, and since its inception there have been over 2,259 events scheduled around it.

The U.S. organization said that it will be hosting many activities this week, including:

Audience with an Astronaut sessions featuring Dr. Leroy Chiao on Oct. 4, Oct. 5 and Oct. 8

• Grand Opening of the Northrop Grumman Science Center on Oct. 5

• Northrop Grumman Family Day at the Northrop Grumman Science Center on Oct. 6

• First Public Day of the Space Foundation Visitors Center on Oct. 9

• Astronaut Dr. Leroy Chiao signs Autographs at the Space Foundation Visitors Center on Oct. 9

Science On a Sphere Educator Event on Oct. 9

For other events that could be in your area, check out World Space Week’s website for the complete list of gatherings.
