ESA Seeking Submissions For December Photo Contest

If you’ve taken a unique or interesting space-related photograph sometime during the past year, then the European Space Agency (ESA) wants to see your work.
The organization announced on Friday that they were soliciting submissions featuring space-related subjects including planets, moons, the Sun, other stars, and galaxies.
Their favorite picture will be selected as the Space Science Image of the Week for December 31 “as a celebration of the astronomical events of the year gone by,” the ESA said. Other top submissions will be featured in the ESA Space Science images Flick gallery.
“During 2012, the sky has staged a series of astronomical theatrics to provide plenty of inspiration for your entry,” the agency said. “Perhaps you were lucky enough to observe a solar eclipse, or even the transit of Venus. Maybe you snapped a meteor streaking through the sky, or perhaps you found beauty in the constellations this year. Images of galaxies and nebulae are also welcomed.”
For those who are interested in participating but have yet to capture any quality celestial bodies, the ESA suggested some upcoming events that could be quality photo opportunities, including this weekend’s Leonids meteor shower, the conjunction between Venus and Saturn on November 27, the penumbral lunar eclipse on November 28, and December 3, when Jupiter will be at opposition and fully illuminated by the Sun.
“Amateur photographers and astronomers from around the world are encouraged to participate,” they said. “Please include your name, contact email address, your geographical location, the date you took the image, the camera/telescope you used, and any imaging/processing details that you would like to share.”
All pictures must have been taken in 2012, and entries are limited to one per person, they said. The competition is open to anyone except ESA employees and contractors and their immediate families, and children under the age of 18 must have their parent’s permission to enter. It must also be the entrant’s original work.
Entries should be emailed to [email protected] with ‘SSIOTW competition 2012’ in the subject line, and must be accompanied by name, email address, location, the date the picture was taken, the camera and/or telescope used, and any additional imaging or processing details the entrant deems necessary. By entering, the photographer grants the ESA the right to use the image on their website and/or social media channels, with credit.
Entries will be accepted until 22:59 GMT on December 10, 2012, the ESA said.
“The images submitted will be evaluated by a panel of judges, including astronomers, planetary scientists and ESA Space Science communications officers. Images will be judged mainly on their aesthetic value. The decisions of the judges are final,” they added.
