Planetary Object Freely Floating In Space Without An Orbit Discovered: CFBDSIR2149

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope have discovered a planet that is freely wandering through space. It has no orbit nor a star attached to it. This planet free-floating planet is labeled CFBDSIR2149 and also referred to as CFBDSIR J214947.2-040308.9.

This video shows an artist’s impression of the free-floating planet CFBDSIR J214947.2-040308.9. In the first part of the sequence the planet appears as a dark disc in visible light, silhouetted against the star clouds of the Milky Way. This is the closest such object to the Solar System and the most exciting candidate free-floating planet found so far. It does not orbit a star and hence does not shine by reflected light; the faint glow it emits can only be detected in infrared light. In the final sequence we see an infrared view of the object with the central parts of the Milky Way as seen by the VISTA infrared survey telescope as background. The object appears blueish in this near-infrared view because much of the light at longer infrared wavelengths is absorbed by methane and other molecules in the planet’s atmosphere. In visible light the object is so cool that it would only shine dimly with a deep red colour when seen close-up.

  • Actually Rogue Planets do exists. the ones that we have found so far have all been gas giants. These are generally thrown out of orbit from their solar system by planets called Hot Jupiters. Its actually interesting. As of yet we have not found any Rock or solid type rogue planets, probably because they’re a lot smaller and harder to see at that great of a distance.

  • Its amazing how all this info is just now being released. Anyime someone says something about planet X. (Which has a possibility of existing) are bashed to fubar. Alternative research of the cosmos have long confirmed of free floating planetoids (made up word) that could cause havoc if it got to close to planets magnetic fields and orbits.
