The image mosaic above was created from almost 1,000 images taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). This mosaic shows the pole when it is best illuminated, regions that are in shadow are candidates for permanent shadow.
Some of LROC’s mission objectives include the identification of regions of permanent shadow and near-permanent illumination.
