Could we build a version of the Starship Enterprise over the next 20 years? Credit: BuildTheEnterprise.org

Earlier this year, an engineer who goes by the name of BTE Dan, proposed building a full-sized, ion-powered version of a Constitution-Class Enterprise – from Star Trek – saying it could be built with current technology and could be completed within 20 years. Now, BTE Dan has started a White House petition not to build the Enterprise but to just do a feasibility study and conceptual design of the USS Enterprise interplanetary spaceship. As of this writing, the petition has 1,414 signatures of the 25,000 needed by January 21, 2013 to be considered by the Obama administration.

The petition reads:

  • This is pretty much a pipe-dream. Read the Allies of Humanity Briefings for some very important perspective on humanity’s presence in space. http://www.alliesofhumanity.org

  • Yes, there are ships visiting Earth with antimatter drive. They can circle the globe in 90 seconds from 200 miles up. Folks, we are very far from this, even though we’ve built a bunch of back engineered anti gravity ships, they are dismally far from cutting edge. Those that control our “real” space program, are splitting for Mars before TSHTF in the first half of 2013. People that suggest things like building the USS Enterprise, have virtually no grasp of anything. Perhaps they could handle a grocery list but that is likely pushing it. No insult meant but perspective is woefully absent, when such blather crosses the event horizon of their mouth. It’s like someone who has a hard time pronouncing their own name, announces they are the lord of hosts, returned to save mankind. Like, what is 6 cuts below ridiculous? On a more cheerful not. “The world is a tragedy for those that feel and a comedy for those that think.” Engage.

  • What is the use of even building this unless they equip it with warp drive or some other type of FTL drive the military may or may not have, several extremely sophisticated future fusion reactors may be powerful enough to propel it through space but it would probably need anti-matter or zero point energy for long voyages, shields and a deflector dish to protect from radiation and metorites/asteroids and other stellar debris, some type of food supply, and computers sopisticated enough to run the ship by itself if needed. I would say it would be more realistic to say something like this could start being built around 2050 to 2100. Then we may have the technology to do it.

  • It would be nice if we could model our society after Star Trek but I don’t see that ever happening because man will never live in peace. Even if we have a global nuclear war man would still kill man if any were left afterwards. The only hope is to be saved by the Grace of God.
