It was just a asteroid on an angle that made it look dangerous to us, just our point of view. It passed with no fan fare a few weeks ago.

@OP if you want to sit there and panic and worry about incoming objects and push the sheeple farther into a lemming like panic state then why not focus on asteroid 2012 DA14 . Look it up its coming in on feb 15th at a close call. Close enough to scare the pants off those who don’t know about it

How can you state that it won’t hit us? If you knew anything about projectiles ,you would be aware that a Meteorite going faster than a speeding Bullet hitting an object like a Satellite can and will be deflected.Any Hunter knows that a 30/30 is for the same reasons a better gun in the bush while a 223 hitting even a fly will wander off and miss its target. No one knows whether it will or will not hit one of the Geostationary Satellites that are arranged in circle around the Globe at a distance of about 35.000km.
Since 2012DA14 intercepts that circle twice descending until its about 16.000 km from earth or 0.09LD from where it will ascend through the 35.000km Circle into Space.
That is providing it does not meet up with a Satellite which could deflect it towards or away from Earth.
If it hits any of the Satellites on his ascend I think the worst case scenario would be the loss of this Satellite and more as the Debris that is no longer stationary can take out a few more.
TV, internet,air traffic, GPS and many military uses will seize to exist.

While we are all doing about to help reduce the fear factor regarding these chunks of rock and ice that are hurtling through space let me add my two cents worth.
Remember Elenin and what a fizzer it turned out to be? This happens when we give asteroids too much credence before they have reached their closest proximity to the sun. Perihelion if you will. Until such time as we see what remains post perihelion we have no real idea of the altered trajectory nor even their makeup let alone mass. It is very common for these anomalies to not meet expectation, just like Elenin, i contend.
Someone mentioned the possibility of an asteroid being deflected by a collision with a geosynchronous satellite and i wish to say that this concern screams of fear mongering or at least arrogance but possibly just ignorance. Compare the mass of the average man made satellite and that of the approaching asteroid and tell me again which is going to do most of the deflecting. Huh?
I noted some ballistic theory being thrown into the mix as well: as if our pitiful knowledge of physics can be applied as we understand it. The obvious difference is the lack of a substantial atmosphere up where these satellites are orbiting. Sure there is always the given of equal and opposite reactions but to suggest the fly versus .223 bullet has anything like the same mass correlation is just silly. The bullet is flying at approximately 2,050 Mph whereas the asteroid would be doing around 40,000 Mph. I suggest the asteroid will hardly notice but any satellite that is struck will definitely feel full effect.
No one is even suggesting that any collision is imminent and our current calculations seem to confirm that if anything does survive post perihelion it is expected to miss albeit by a slim enough margin. We will have to wait and see but i do not recommend cancelling your newspaper subscription just yet.
Overall we have far more to concern ourselves with right here on our own planetoid and i say we can just leave the cosmos possibilities in the realm of mildly interesting. If i’m wrong then at least i won’t have spent too much time fretting over it. Comet 2012 DA14 is going to have to run smack dab into my outstretched right arm that will be flipping it the bird moments before it has any chance of becoming a meteor.

Furthermore there is a Size Differential as well as a Distance differential.
The closest approach of COMET Elenin to Earth was 22 MILLION Miles get it? … The closest approach of the ASTEROID 2012 DE14 is 20.THOUSAND Miles.

That of course can happen to a chunk of Ice not likely to a solid highly mineralised Rock.
So there you have it,should it land in Cooks Straight you might get a closer look at it.

I do know the difference between all three and would be happy to clear up your confusion if you like. Let me know on that score my anonymous educator. I disagree that there is an inherent size difference as you suggest but correct i did not attend your education system and therefore can have no opinion on the information you were indoctrinated with.
I’m not able to ascertain where you get off labeling my notion about 2012 DA14 as incorrect when all of the literature that i have read suggests that it is an ice and rock combo. My point remains valid that until this asteroid reaches it’s closest point to the sun that we can have no idea what behaviour it might exhibit. It could in fact be drawn into the sun and therefore to it’s demise.
My reference to Elenin was only to show that these things seldom meet expectation. Let me put it bluntly. All of the hoopla, and it was considerable, came to about naught.
I am not saying that there will not be a very impressive flyby but i am saying that on the balance of probabilities it is unlikely.

I do see where i labelled 2012 DA14 as a comet and agree that it is in fact currently an asteroid but this can change simply by it gaining an atmosphere and thusly a tail through it’s close approach to our sun.

A space rock of 150 feet in diameter will never obtain an Atmosphere going through Space at the speed it is traveling.

Wrong again…or just simply Stubborn ….Yes Kiwis …South or North Islanders are different from Roos.. I called it an ASTEROID,because that is what NASA determines it to be ,maybe your English is good but your reading or comprehension skills suck. In your reply you call it a Meteor or Meteorite same thing in a sense as explained in the Link below. It is a solid object that sheds no moisture and if you bother to Google it, you will find that this particular ROCK consists mainly of Carbon ,Iron and Nickel as most of the others that have been subjected to spectral analysis.
No Ice,No Water, No tail, unlike Comets.
