The visionary company Planetary Resources, Inc. recently announced that Bechtel, one of the most respected engineering, project management, and construction companies in the world, has joined their core group of investors as a collaborative partner.

Formerly known as Arkyd Astronautics, Planetary Resources’ stated long-term mission is to mine near-Earth asteroids for raw materials, which could include anything from the elements used in rocket fuel to precious metals. The company says it plans to do this by developing and implementing innovative and cost-effective robotic exploration technologies. The company already has multiple contracts to create miniaturized and responsive technologies with such wide applications as space assessment, accessibility and resource recovery.

“As we pursue our vision to expand the resource base beyond Earth; we’re extremely excited to announce this partnership with Bechtel. They are a world leader in the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) industry,” said Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, Co-Founder and Co-Chairman, Planetary Resources, Inc. “Bechtel has a history of consistently tackling the most challenging projects, beginning with the construction of the Hoover Dam more than 75 years ago.”

Based in San Francisco, Bechtel is currently the largest construction and engineering company in the US and the fifth-largest privately owned company.

“Planetary Resources’ mission is ambitious, but they’ve assembled a world-class team to succeed,” said Riley Bechtel, Bechtel Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Our companies share a common vision to continually innovate and push boundaries, all aimed at contributing to a better quality of life. We look forward to joining the Planetary Resources’ team.”

Planetary Resources is celebrating their one-year anniversary with a Google hangout on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at 11:00 am PDT. The hangout, open to the public, will feature a brief year-in-review, current status on the development of the Arkyd series of spacecraft, and an outlook to the future of asteroid prospecting, exploration and mining. Details for the event can be found on their Google+ page.
