Recurrent M-Class Disturbances | October 28, 2013

The Sun unleashed another major solar flare, the third of its kind in three days, scientists say.

The huge solar storm occurred late Sunday at 10:03 p.m. EDT (0203 Oct. 28 GMT). It registered as an X-class solar flare — the most powerful type of flare the sun has — and followed two back-to-back X-flares that erupted from the sun on Friday (Oct. 25). NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured a video of the new X-class solar flare as it happened.

This latest solar flare erupted from an active sunspot region called AR1875 and triggered a strong radio blackout when it occurred, officials with the NOAA-run Space Weather Prediction Group explained in a status update. The flare also coincided with a massive explosion of super-hot solar plasma — called a coronal mass ejection, or CME — which should reach Earth by Oct. 30 and could trigger minor geomagnetic storms in the planet’s magnetic field, they added.

Since early October, the Sun has not ceased to produce powerful eruptions (28 M-Class and 3 X-Class!), this clear resurgence of activity was planned by SWPC forecasters. Another exemple here with this M-Class Flare associated with what seems to be a significant Filament Activation originating from AR11877 and moving southwards. This one was pretty spectacular.

Monday Morning Flaring

Published on Oct 28, 2013

http://www.thesuntoday.org - Monday morning flares! In the early morning of 10/28/2013, around 1:40 UT the sun erupted producing an X1 solar flare. A few days earlier X flares came from active region AR11882 but this event came from the region AR11875 on the west limb (right side) of the sun. The X flare peaked in the GOES X-ray at 02:03 UT. Material that eventually became a CME can be seen blasting out. A few hours later an even more spectacular eruption occurred. The associated flare was smaller, an M5.1 peaking at 04:41 UT but the erupting material was much more exciting. This also lead to a CME but both plasma clouds are directed away from Earth. The events have also sent energetic protons our way but the increase has not been very sudden or large. The images in this video are composites of the SDO/AIA 304, 171 and 131 angstrom filters though the color tables are adjusted slightly.
