Photo Credit Un pallone nella stratosfera per immortalare il passaggio di ISON
The Balloon Rapid Response for ISON (BRRISON) payload lifted off at 8:10 p.m. EDT from Ft. Sumner, N.M., on a mission that primarily includes the sun-grazing Comet ISON as one of its observation targets.
Following an uncommon evening launch from Ft. Sumner, BRRISON will observe the comet for up to six hours using infrared and near ultraviolet/visible imaging systems while suspended from a NASA scientific balloon about 127,000 feet above the Earth.
“There are so many firsts when it comes to BRRISON,” said Andrew Cheng, BRRISON principal investigator, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
“This is the first time we’ve been able to deploy this level of technology to study an Oort Cloud comet of this type, and we’re doing it from a scientific balloon.

Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) will turn around the sun in November 28, 2013. If we are lucky and the comet will not be broken apart we could see it even in bright daylight.
C/2012 S1, also known as Comet ISON or Comet Nevski–Novichonok, is a sungrazing comet discovered on 21 September 2012 by Vitali Nevski (Виталий Невский, Vitebsk, Belarus) and Artyom Novichonok (Артём Новичонок, Kondopoga, Russia). The discovery was made using the 0.4-meter (16 in) reflector of the International Scientific Optical Network near Kislovodsk, Russia and the automated asteroid-discovery program CoLiTec. Precovery images by the Mount Lemmon Survey from 28 December 2011 and by Pan-STARRS from 28 January 2012 were quickly located. Follow-up observations were made on 22 September by a team from Remanzacco Observatory in Italy using the iTelescope network. The discovery was announced by the Minor Planet Center on 24 September. Observations by SWIFT suggest that C/2012 S1′s nucleus is around 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) in diameter. – from Wikipedia.org
