The moment of truth will come on Thanksgiving Day for comet ISON.
Discovered in September 2012, the comet was hailed as the “comet of the century” based on predictions of how it would brighten since its orbit would bring it to less than one solar diameter from the sun’s surface on Nov. 28th, 2013.
The comet continued to look promising for about three months, then stopped brightening last January. Since then, it has only brightened a little. At least one comet expert sees this a sure sign that comet ISON will disintegrate during the first week of November, although others think that the comet is slow to develop, but may burst into activity at its closest pass to the sun, the comet’s perihelion, on Thanksgiving day.
