This video showing the mountains, craters, ancient river beds and lava flows of Mars has been made from pictures taken by a European satellite. The Mars Express satellite had been launched in 2003 and has now orbited the “Red Planet” around 12,500 times, taking spectacular images of the Martian landscape to form the 3D map used in this video.

A video showing the mountains, craters, ancient river beds and lava flows of Mars has been created from pictures taken by a European satellite. The Mars Express satellite was launched in 2003 and has now orbited the red planet around 12,500 times, taking images of the Martian landscape to form the 3D map used in the video. It is expected to continue its journey until the end of 2014. The European Space Agency joined forces with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to create the flyover video as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the spacecraft’s launch. The soundtrack is an original score by the DLR’s planet cartography specialist Stephan Elgner. Report by Ashley Fudge.
