Winners of First ESO Astronomy Camp Bursaries Announced

The registrations for the first ESO astronomy camp for secondary school students have closed with 170 applications from 23 countries submitted and the winners of the 12 bursaries offered by ESO and the national partners have been selected. The camp, organised by Sterrenlab in collaboration with ESO and its science outreach network, will take place from 26–31 December 2013 at the Astronomical Observatory of the Aosta Valley, located in Saint-Barthelemy, Nus, Italy.

The camp will accommodate around 50 secondary school students aged between 16 and 18 from the ESO Member States and ESO science outreach network countries. From these, nine were selected to receive a bursary that covers the complete cost of the camp including transport, and three to receive partial grants.

ESO was initially going to offer only one bursary, but the many entries from Brazil and Poland and their excellent quality convinced the ESO organisers to grant exceptionally two additional bursaries for the best entry in each of these countries. The recipients of ESO’s three bursaries are: Hera Protopapas Wettergren (aged 16, Sweden) for her determination and talented entry, Lucas Carvalho Cordeiro (aged 17, Brazil) for his ambitious plan to “burn Brazilians’ heart with the light of the Cosmos” and his creativity and Maciej Garbacz (aged 17, Poland) for his impressive activity in the area of astronomy.

The following nine bursaries were granted by national partners in ESO Member States:

From INAF (Italian National Institute for Astrophysics) and the University of Milan, Italy, two free trips, for Sara Sieni (aged 17) and Edoardo Altamura (aged 17);
From the Sociedad Espanola de Astronomia, Spain one free trip for Patricia Vicente (aged 16) and partial grants for the following runners up: Ariadna Albors Zumel (aged 17), Miguel Angel Garcia Valverde (aged 16) and Andrés López Moreno (aged 16);
From the University of Geneva, Switzerland one free trip for: Isabella Giulia (aged 18);
From the Polish Astronomical Society and “Urania – Postępy Astronomii” Poland one free trip for Kamila Ulatowska (aged 18) and from the Polish Children’s Fund one free trip for Katarzyna Budzik (aged 18).
