Perchlorate is everywhere on Mars (http://www.planete-mars-suisse.com/crbst_166.html). It has been on Mars for billions of years (see above link). Perchlorate salts are produced by the oxidation of solutions of sodium chlorate, which is a bleaching agent ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perchlorate#Production_and_use and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_chlorate ).
So, omnipresent perchlorate may be a sign of sterilization in ancient Mars.
Bone fragments may be unchanged in a sterile environment as shown in this experiment result: “As before, the fragments in the sterile environment were unchanged and appeared as fresh as new bone.” Quoted from the third paragraph in the third story at http://www.sciencebuzz.org/buzz_tags/dinosaur_bones
High resolution osteons in a dinosaur bone:
Perchlorate is widespread in the environment due to its use in
rocket propellants, explosives, fireworks, and other applications. Its
high mobility and ecological-toxicity make treatment of perchlorate-contaminated
water urgent.

This bacterium-like microbe, Archaeoglobus fulgidus, can live in the high temperatures found near deep-sea vents. They can also survive by consuming perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel.

Unfortunately, many many years ago, all the Martians were born looking like Michael Jackson. Then someone had a great idea about bleaching. That’s when things got out of hand.
