I often wondered why so many geologists could not see any fossilized remains of animal tissues and cells in volcanic rocks. Now I think I know one of the reasons is that geologists use the wrong microscopes in studying rocks or in searching for minute fossil tissues in rocks. They use microscopes that are fitted with polarized light. Such microscopes are good for studying rocks that contain no fossil tissues. But the lighting of such microscopes can not show the remains of fossil tissues clearly. For example, this micrograph was taken with polarized light (used by no biologists):
