Earthgrazing Fireball Seen Over Eastern USA | Space Science Video. On May 15, 2014, at 8:38:30 PM CDT, a basketball-sized meteoroid entered the atmosphere 63 miles above Columbia, South Carolina.
It’s estimated speed was 78,000 miles per hour, moving northwest, before burning up north of Chattanooga. This particular meteor was considered an “Earthgrazer,” as it skimmed along the upper part of the atmosphere for an estimated 290 miles – an unusually long distance for a meteor.
