ALERT: SEVERE (G4) Geomagnetic STORM, the Strongest of the Current Solar Cycle

HEADS UP! A severe geomagnetic storm is whipping through Earth’s magnetosphere, causing disruption to power systems and spawning a beautiful greenaurora that stretched as far south as Oregon and Illinois.
The storm, which began late Monday as a weak G1 intensified Tuesday morning, climbing to a G4 on the five-point scale, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. This makes the storm the strongest in the current solar cycle, says spaceweather.com. The current storm is in season, so to speak, since they are most common around the equinoxes.
It’s possible that polar flights — like those on their way from the eastern United States to Asia — may prefer a more southerly route to maintain communications. This storm could continue for many hours to come as Earth passes through the turbulent wake of the CME.

VHF Aurora Opening Watch
Severe geomagnetic storming (KP=8) continues this afternoon. Sky watchers across Northern Europe, the UK and Scandinavia should experience brilliant aurora displays this evening. On the radio front, ham operators located at higher latitudes in Europe are now making VHF contacts via the AU. Radio operators located in the northern tier USA and Canada should have their antennas north and ready this evening local time. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) continues to point south and is prolonging this major geomagnetic event.
