With the flag of the United States sewn to his shoulder, a comfort glove pulled over his left hand and a package of mustard seeds in his pocket, Ed White became the first American to ‘go EVA’ (extravehicular activity) 50 years ago Wednesday (June 3). The first U.S. spacewalk on Gemini 4 opened the door to a half century of astronauts working in the vacuum of space.
