NASA says a mysterious object that lit up the night sky over the southeastern United States was only space debris re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. Channel 2 Action News received several phone calls to their newsroom and many people posted pictures and videos to social media, all reporting the glowing object they had seen. The object was spotted around 1:30 a.m. in the night skies over Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama.
Plane crash investigations ceased when the fireball spotted over Alabama turned out to be a meteor. The Alabama police were investigating a possible plane crash after receiving reports of a fireball in the sky. This ball of fire was spotted in the sky over Walker Country around 1:00 a.m. Monday morning.
Several individuals who witnessed the fireball called police, believing there had been an aviation accident. Deputies with the Walker and Jefferson County Sheriff’s offices were dispatched to investigate the sighting as a possible plane crash in the area between Sumiton and Dora, local news reported.
Once the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the sighting was of a meteor, the Alabama police departments in the area called off the search for a possible crashed plane.
