NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope website redesign and new 25th anniversary resources

17 April 2015

Following weeks of development, Hubble has a new design for its website and a wealth of new resources available for the 25th anniversary celebrations.

There are extra resources available to help press and public alike in their celebration of the anniversary. This includes a detailed press pack full of information about Hubble, including information on the history of Hubble, Hubble’s greatest discoveries, a short fact sheet and a biography of Edwin P. Hubble. This is available in both English and Spanish.

Also on the resources page are two sets of slides on Hubble, its history and its future which can be used for talks and presentations.

New fulldome clips are also appearing every month for use by planetariums worldwide.

The main motivation for the changes to the website’s design was to give the site a more user-friendly interface and to make it more responsive on mobile platforms. The new design adapts itself automatically to the resolution of the display that the visitor uses — a technology widely adopted to accommodate the use of smartphones or tablets to visit websites. The redesign creates a more functional web page with an updated and striking design. This allows Hubble, and the science results coming from it, to be presented in the best possible way.

The new design gives the Hubble web pages a less organisational look and adopts a style closer to that of a magazine or an online newspaper. This is especially true for the redesign of the pages containing the press releases and announcements. This way it is easier to highlight the achievements, scientific breakthroughs and attractive visual material that Hubble is creating on an almost daily basis.

The new interface is touch-friendly, in terms of both layout and interaction, but still contains the same content available on the old web pages. We hope that the new design will make it more attractive to new users, but by keeping the same structure on the web page, we also aim not confuse the users that we already have.
