Reality Rag – Harper Turns To Russia For Space Bracelets

Either Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has a massive set of testes on him or he’s developed massive delusions of grandeur during his term as PM. Which isn’t too surprising for a politician of his status, is it?

Harper and Russian President Vladimir Putin don’t have the greatest of relationships. Canada has placed strict sanctions on their activities in the Ukraine. Things got so heated up at the G-20 summit in 2013 that Harper outright told Putin to ‘get out of Ukraine’. I don’t know if Harper thinks he’s that much of a bad ass or if he’s simply relying on the backing of the US military in the event Putin just laughs in his face. Who knows. It’s pretty ballsy though, if you ask me. We are known for having one of the best militaries in the world, but when it comes to numbers we’re pretty minuscule in relation to countries such as Russia.

I’m wondering if Harper was eating his words, however, when he found out from the Canadian Space Agency they were interested in acquiring a type of space ‘bracelet’ that monitors astronauts’ blood pressure levels while they’re out in space. The device sends back data to earth to be analyzed for health and study. PM Harper would of course be on board with this, as it’s quite expensive to train astronauts and the CSA doesn’t have a lot of them in relation to other countires. There is one issue, however. The only organization on the planet who can offer such a ‘bracelet’ is the Russian Institute of BioMedical Problems. Is Harper going to have to do some kissing up to Mr. Putin?

The Russian Institute of BioMedical Problems celebrated it’s 50th anniversary in 2013. It is one of the few non-profit organizations on the planet manufacturing bio-medical devices such as the ‘bracelet’ in question.

NASA has reported that Vascular Echo studies have shown that astronauts returning from space following lengthy visits suffer from stiffer arteries. The Russian space bracelet will allow bioligists and other scientists to keep an eye on the space travellers’ blood pressure levels and hopefully, keep them healthier and perhaps even save lives.

Let’s hope Putin comes across for the Canadian Space Agency. Say what you will about Russian and Vladimir Putin. At least his country has attempted to address dangerous issues like raised blood pressure in space. Putin seems to have a lot of bargaining power with these bracelets. Will he cut Canada a deal?
