New findings from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have offered the strongest evidence yet that liquid water is flowing intermittently on present-day Mars. Researchers have found the chemical signatures of hydrated salts on steep slopes where streaks are seen on the planet. “This is a significant development, as it appears to confirm water, albeit briny, is flowing today on the surface of Mars,” stated John Grunsfeld, astronaut and NASA’s associate administrator for science.
