Babies begin their lives right in the mother’s womb. Before they enter the world, they are capable of doing amazing things right when they are in the womb. Below are a few surprising images you would love to see what babies do inside their mothers:

1. Your Baby Can Smile While In The Womb:

Recent advances in ultrasound scanning have shown that babies smile, cry and blink inside the womb, an obstetrician said today.

Images captured using a 4D scanner suggest that unborn babies exhibit facial expressions as a reflex in preparation for birth, Professor Stuart Campbell said.

Professor Campbell, who has observed such expressions since he first started using the revolutionary scanner in 2001, said it was previously thought babies learned to smile after birth by copying their mothers.

Babies do not normally smile after birth until they are about six weeks old.

2. Babies Can Open Their Eyes In The Womb:

Vision is the last sense your baby develops, which helps explain why her eyesight is so fuzzy as a newborn (at birth, your baby can only see about 8 to 12 inches in front of her).

Your unborn baby’s eyelids remain closed until you’re about 28 weeks pregnant, which allows the retinas to fully develop. After that time, her eyes open and even begin to blink. Here’s a fun fact: As soon as their eyes open in the womb, twin babies can find each other — and will touch each other’s faces or hold hands!

3. Babies Can Hiccup In The Womb:

If you start feeling a spasm, a long rhythmic movement or tiny jumping contractions in your belly, be sure to laugh aloud and know that your little one has started hiccupping already. Don’t worry, these hiccups are the ultimate signal to a baby’s healthy and growing respiratory system functions.

If you were sipping from a glass of water all day long, there’s a good chance you’d be hiccupping a lot, too. That’s pretty much what’s happening to your unborn baby—your little one is constantly drinking amniotic fluid, and if a small amount enters his lungs, his diaphragm will contract in order to get rid of it. And yes, it’s totally normal. Baby won’t choke because he receives all his oxygen through the placenta.

4. Babies Can Taste Food While In The Womb:

By the time you’re 13 to 15 weeks pregnant, your baby’s taste buds have developed, and she can start sampling different flavors from your diet. The amniotic fluid she swallows in utero can taste strongly of spices like curry or garlic or other pungent meals. Your baby’s taste buds predispose her to liking sweet tastes, though (it’s nature’s way of helping babies like breast milk), and studies show that babies swallow more amniotic fluid when it tastes sweet than when it is sour or bitter.

5. Baby Crying In The Womb:

This one might break your heart a little, but there’s a chance your little one could be crying silently in your womb this very minute. Using ultrasound technology, scientists were able to identify crying behaviours in developing babies. Researchers have even noted that babies exhibit a trembling bottom lip when crying in utero. Crying is an important communication tool for new babies, and it’s one they need to perfect before they enter the world.

6. Baby Breathing Inside the Womb:

The umbilical cord provides your baby with all of the oxygen he needs during pregnancy, but your baby is still busy practicing breathing for when he’s born. At just nine weeks, he starts going through the motions, practicing breathing and perfecting this necessary life skill. Your baby’s first breath is triggered by the sudden change in both temperature and environment as he enters the world. That’s why, if you choose to have a water birth, the pool water must be at body temperature when the baby is born. This delays the temperature change, and thus the first breath, until the baby is lifted out of the pool. With the umbilical cord still attached, your baby will continue to get oxygen.

7. Baby Pee In The Uterus:

Just a couple of months into their development, little humans begin peeing freely into the amniotic fluid that surrounds them in the womb. Then, foreshadowing all the gross stuff that babies do once they’re born, they’ll consume that urine as they swallow the amniotic fluid. Every last one of us has spent several months drinking our own pee. Yay.
