UN Report Denounces U.S. Spying Programs

A new human rights report developed by the United Nations severely criticizes spying programs in the United States and other countries.

Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated governments use “de facto coercion” to spy on citizens.

The the report, Pillay stated interest in surveillance programs was sparked by reports of spying by the NSA and other forces.

Spying is not limited to the United States, as governments all over the world are carrying out similar programs.

The study called for additional laws to prevent abuses of surveillance, and provide for relief when programs are abused. The report also warned of possible privacy concerns from a new bill being pushed through Parliament.

Pillay said “The United Kingdom is one of the most well-established democracies in the world so it is a surprise to me they have not undergone a public dialogue on these key issues.”

The measure will mandate that telecommunications companies retain customer records for an entire year. Britain’s three main political parties crafted the legislation in secret. Prime Minister David Cameron told lawmakers passing the law is essential to security. The bill has already passed the House of Commons, and is set to go on to the House of Lords.

The report stated that electronic spying has become “a dangerous habit rather than an exceptional measure.”

The report concluded that nations should review their surveillance policies, and bring them in line with international standards for human rights.
