Being Stressed Can Bring Out Your Best by Panache Desai

(Before It's News)

Over the past eight weeks my wife Jan and I have a new perspective on rolling with all that life can dish up as our baby daughters take center stage in the Desai household. News flash: being a new parent is stressful. I don’t care if you’ve raised nieces and nephews, babysat your entire life, raised passels of puppies or even parented other children (my wife Jan has a grown son and daughter), nothing truly prepares you for having your own. Babies are synonymous with being blindsided – from upset tummies to sleepless nights; from diaper blow-outs to a frustrating inability to interpret their cries. The new normal at our house is chaos and we are learning to flow with the inevitable stress of all that these changes entail. We welcome it recognizing that it is an opportunity to discover new and deeper aspects of our true being and provide a means to develop our greater, expanded potential.

Stress’s M.O.
Is stress a bad thing? All the research and reports would lead you to believe only one side of the story… that levels of stress are increasing and that individuals across the planet are unable to handle it. Stress is a precursor to 90 percent of all illness and left untreated is a death knell. However, this isn’t my perspective at all.
Stress is the ability to adapt to change or pressure. Therefore, isn’t stress, or the ability to adapt to change, the essence of life? In fact, stress is as natural as breathing! It’s the ebb and flow, and the inhale and exhale of existence itself.

The Role of Distress
At the heart of our disharmony, discord, and dis-ease is that we are repeatedly failing to adapt to the changes and challenges of life. It’s this breakdown which throws our nervous systems and our physical bodies into the experience of “distress,” the failure to adapt to stress or change. We are a world that is distressed, not stressed! And with this heightened level of unease and pressure comes the symptoms we try and medicate or fix – worry, depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, and a myriad of physical symptoms including aches, pains, nausea, dizziness, gastrointestinal disorders, loss of sex drive, and frequent illness.

Harness the Power of Stress
Stress as an invitation and an opportunity. Just imagine your life if you could harness the power of stress? How different would your life be if you could view your body’s symptoms or feelings of stress as a sign that you are being called into more, into a greater experience and version of yourself that COULD NEVER HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE HAD STRESS NOT BROUGHT IT TO YOUR ATTENTION?

Take a moment. Breathe that in.
If you think you can’t make stress work in your favor or that no one has really figured out how to tap into the amazing power and rocket fuel that can come through stress, then let’s consider some of the biggest stress junkies of all, marathon runners! With a demanding training regimen required to complete a 26.2-mile run, these runners make stress their constant ally, measure, incentive, and guidepost to bring themselves into a greater possibility and a greater expansion of who they are. I wasn’t surprised at all to hear how that training and attitude brought about an even greater sense of possibility and expansion for the entire world in a heartwarming story that made the news after Hurricane Sandy.

It turns out that the famed New York City marathon was scheduled to take place the same weekend that Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast, including a major portion of New York City. Mayor Bloomberg delayed cancelling the marathon until late Friday evening because he thought that the race could serve to unite the city in the face of this disaster. Well, it turns out that his cancelling the event after over a thousand runners had already traveled from all around the world to New York led to something even more unifying and profound for all of us.

These well-trained runners, who came prepared with hours and hours and miles and miles of stress training, had a lot of energy stored up and they were accustomed to and able to adapt to change. When the marathon was cancelled, instead of resisting, denouncing, or trying to control this huge change, many of the marathoners instead chose to embrace the unique opportunity at hand to aid in the clean-up and supply distribution efforts. Over a thousand of the marathon runners donned backpacks of supplies and got through to neighborhoods where emergency vehicles hadn’t even arrived yet. Their arrival greatly cheered the spirits of the many families where entire neighborhoods had been destroyed. Both the runners and all those they helped reached new levels of expansion and embodiment of the human experience that weekend. Many of the marathoners interviewed said they wouldn’t change their experience for anything.

So the next time stress, either chosen or unexpected, shows up on your doorstep, how can you be inspired to harness its full potential?

The Circle of Life by Panache Desai

The Circle of Life Reminds Us to Count Our Blessings
I have never been a fan of hospitals. As a child I remember cringing at the thought of being dragged to visit sick loved ones. Just a short time ago, however, I found myself excited to voluntarily be in a hospital and for an entirely different reason…

The Changing Face of Mother by Panache Desai

The definitions and concepts around “Mother” have radically changed over the last 100 years. Today both women and men are mothers. Between adoption, foster care and with advanced fertility technology like egg donation and surrogacy, almost anyone can have a child. Gone are age limits. Increasingly we are seeing baby boomers raise their grandchildren. People like Oprah Winfrey are mothering an entire generation without ever having given birth. And in 2012, the qualities that make a great mother require an infinite blending and balancing of both the feminine and the masculine. All these radical shifts in this area alone are living testament as to how our reality is fluid and changing…
