Everything is foreseen, yet free will is granted…the mystical side of Judaism and life
at the Western Wall with Reb Gutman Locks @ Mystical Paths
I tried everything I could think of, but he kept saying, “No,” over and over again. He was very polite, and very insistent, “No!” He was an American who was staying in Tel Aviv for a few months.
“Do you have a mezuzah (scrolls affixed to the doorposts) in your house?” I asked.
“On every door,” he assured me, with a hint of, “See?”
“Do you know what it says in the mezuzah? It says to put on tefillin. Now, why do you have the mezuzahs there if you do not listen to what they tell you?”
He didn’t budge. I tried a number of things, but he wouldn’t give in. I went back to the tefillin cart knowing that at least I softened him up for the next guy who tries to help him, but I couldn’t move him.
A few minutes later he walked over, and put out his arm. I helped him. He read the shema, and prayed for his family. Then, before I took them off, I asked him, “What changed? Why did you decide to put them on?”
Tears came to his eyes. He wiped them with the back of his hand and said, “It’s this place. There’s something special here.”
He’s right.
