Every few months, it seems, someone comes up with a new theory about the origins of Stonehenge, what it was used for or why the megalithic monument was eventually abandoned. This Sunday evening Channel 4 will be showing a documentary called Secrets of the Stonehenge Skeletons, which claims to offer some original insights.

The programme examines the findings of Professor Mike Parker Pearson, who has analysed some of the bone fragments and skeletons archaeologists have found at England’s most famous ancient stone circle.

On its website, Channel 4 says: “The results of that investigation overturn the accepted view on when Stonehenge was built and what it was built for, providing compelling evidence that it once united the people of Britain.”

It also says: “The programme proves that the monument we know today was not the original Stonehenge and answers the mystery of its sudden decline.”

I’ll certainly be watching out of interest. The documentary is on the telly at 8pm, on Sunday 10 March.

Watched it, turned out disappointing because they were spewing the same ‘it’s a burial’ nonsense… code for clueless. In this case because they found a large number of burnt human bone fragments. They are all too high brow and forget the mundane human problems they had to deal with. It’s far more likely they are from the remains of war captives and murderers. They got rid of them by burning them alive in a wicker man. They had no other way of dealing with them other than execution so made a spectacle of it as a warning. The best time to get the message across is when you have the most people to witness it. Such a time would be at the summer solstice festival when people from all over would be there.

    The program was 99% speculation.

They also disconnected Stone Henge from all the other megalithic structures in the area, as if it’s the only one. Which gives you a false impression that it was a unique place. Actually there was another just as large stone henge near Avebury. Avebury it’self is on a much larger scale than Stone Henge, with West Kennet long barrow, Silbury Hill, Windmill hill and Wood Henge all being very close to each other. There was another massive complex of monuments where Heathrow Airport is, they destroyed it during WW2 because it was very recognisable from the air. Not a trace of it remains.

TThe above from Pix is all correct. I would like to add a theory I think is far more human, than fantasy
But of course if it’s on TV and it’s regarding ancient history. It will always be twisted.around to ceremony and religion.

This ‘new’ find is all based on bone fragments.
It is now widely accepted that at the time of STONEHENGES CURRENT CONSTRUCTION.
The coastline was close to site. Some few hundred feet.
It could be seen from the sea….

It would have also taken slaves to construct, many slaves, many would have perished onsite, similar to those who died in numbers constructing the churchest and cathedrals of Europe.

They would not have been returned to their motherland as the stones were quarried in Wales and brought by papyrus boats. They would have been either burnt or simply buried close by.

I have my own conclusions about the rings found not just over.the UK but worldwide. I think they are maps and marking points. It also maybe that the other, more centrally located rings are older than Stone Henge, the coast has changed so much, especially along the Jurassic coast.

Could it be a signal to those at sea, a marker after a sudden environmental iissue for those retiring home?
I’ve no doubt the rings have been used by various sun worship religions over the years too.

If you once landed upon the shore, after sighting the Stones.from the sea, you could work out the time, date and your location based upon knowledge of the moon and stars.

This also substantiates my belief that Stone Henge is not as old as Avebury for example, the condition and location is a massive clue. As is its obvious connection to both time and location, which is navigation.

I grew up in the Shires of England. There are still things talked.about, especially the further west you go….
