Enlightenment is a seemingly-elusive experience and state of existence that many feel few attain at any given point in the timeline of human history.

However, there are those that do and it seems that more and more individuals are experiencing the enlightenment of their consciousness than ever before, or at least more people are hearing about these experiences of an enlightened soul thanks to the internet.

There is a modern saying that points out that when in 500 BC there was only one bodhisattva (enlightened being), today there are a thousand. Perhaps it is because there is simply a greater number of people alive now. Maybe it is thanks to the incredibly open access most humans have to such a wealth of information and knowledge through the Internet, which itself acts as an akashic “hall of records” so to speak.

Whatever the reasons, the experience of becoming enlightened rests on a transcendental experience that a person must go through before becoming enlightened: the transcendence of the ego (illusory self) and taking away its dominance over the our being.

Most of the things which can be considered growth-debilitating in human cultures and societies around the world seem to originate from the self-centered ego. Thanks to this “false” self that craves being the center of our existence, we humans discriminate, criticize, judge, are selfish, are unforgiving, have fear, and on and on and on.

There is one simple, yet powerful, realization that has to be made and experienced before the enlightenment experience can occur: Self-realization.
