OVERTAKE
katalabē, Strong’s 2638
lay hold of, seize
2638 katalambánō (from 2596 /katá, “down, according to,” which intensifies 2983 /lambánō, “aggressively take”) – properly, take hold of exactly, with decisive initiative (eager self-interest); to grasp something in a forceful (firm) manner; (figuratively) to apprehend (comprehend), “making it one’s own.”
The element of surprise was NOT the focus of the Son of God,
Light, light…light in order to see!
35 So Jesus told them, “For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.”
John 12
The Light of the world no longer walked among them, THEN came darkness to ‘aggressively take’ those who would not keep Messiah’s words nor do the will of the Father in heaven: antichrist spirit and antichrist Paul as John warned was already in the world.
Messiah comes as a thief in the night to those not keeping HIS WORDS, not Pharisee doctrine!
“Remember, then, what you have received and heard. Keep it and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know the hour when I will come upon you.”
Revelation 3:2
Not ‘forcefully grasped’ by a unexpected day (which diverts attention from the very threat — DARKNESS)…
4But you, brothers, are not in the darkness so that this day should overtake you like a thief.
5For you are all sons of the light and sons of the day; we do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
1 Thessalonians 5
