Updated 2017 Rankings: Top 15 Second Basemen: Kipnis Disappears & More

Second base is deeper than ever before, so much so that the disappearance to Jason Kipnis (who is slated to open the season on the DL and could miss all of April, thus dropping him from our rankings) has done little to impact things. There are ample buying opportunities, thanks to players with multi-position eligibility (like Trea Turner and Matt Carpenter). How do things currently stand? Let’s take a look:

2. Trea Turner – Washington Nationals
3. Robinson Cano – Seattle Mariners
4. Matt Carpenter – St. Louis Cardinals
5. Ian Kinsler – Detroit Tigers
6. Dee Gordon – Miami Marlins
7. Daniel Murphy – Washington Nationals
8. Brian Dozier – Minnesota Twins
9. Rougned Odor – Texas Rangers
10. Jean Segura – Arizona Diamondbacks
11. D.L. LeMahieu – Colorado Rockies
12. Logan Forsythe – Los Angeles Dodgers
13. Devon Travis – Toronto Blue Jays
14. Neil Walker – New York Mets
15. Kolten Wong – St. Louis Cardinals

- With Kipnis dropping out of the rankings it’s Kolten Wong who sneaks in at #15. He’s obviously coming off a lost year, but Wong appears primed to open the year as the Cardinals’ starting second baseman and offers 10/15 upside (if not a little more) with regular playing time. That should be more than enough to put him on your radar, though it’s hard to depend on him as St. Louis has proven that they aren’t afraid to sit him down if he’s not producing.
- Obviously most people are a lot higher on Brian Dozier than we are here. Why does he slot in at #8, as opposed to being a Top 5 option in standard formats? A regression is likely, especially in the power department, and we also can’t overlook the potentially poor average. For an in-depth look at his ranking, click here for our profile.
- Logan Forsythe missed some time due to a knee issue earlier this spring, but he returned a few weeks ago and is quickly rounding into form. Slotted to hit atop the Dodgers lineup, he easily could provide value and you can argue he is being overlooked. If you had to “settle” for him as your starting option, you shouldn’t be disappointed.
- Speaking of health issues, will Devon Travis ever be able to stay healthy for the long haul? He’s still working back from offseason knee surgery and it almost feels like we have to wonder when he’s going to get injured again. If healthy he could produce like a Top 10 option, but he needs to prove capable.
