Are you someone constantly on the lookout for the next potential closer? That’s what we are trying to pinpoint here, with our Top 5 Closer In Waiting Power Rankings. These rankings look at the pitchers who appear capable of taking over their team’s respective closing duties (though in some cases, will need some help to get there). Keep in mind, if a pitcher is currently part of a committee they will not be included in these rankings (i.e. the Oakland A’s situation) despite not currently “holding” the job outright.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at how things stand:

---|---|---|---|---|
1. | Matt Bush | Texas Rangers | Sam Dyson | Dyson has taken the Shawn Tolleson route & one more poor showing could lead to a change |
2. | Hector Neris | Philadelphia Phillies | Jeanmar Gomez | Can someone explain why Gomez was handed the job? |
3. | Koda Glover | Washington Nationals | Blake Treinen | Treinen showed a crack on 04/05/17 & with concerns about Shawn Kelley’s workload Glover should be next up if change needed |
4. | Michael Lorenzen | Cincinnati Reds | Raisel Iglesias | They talked about multiple closers, but for now appears Iglesias holding role w/Lorenzen laying in wait |
5. | Corey Knebel | Milwaukee Brewers | Neftali Feliz | Feliz is a tough closer to fully buy into & it appears that Knebel is the next up when he drops the ball |
