The team at Add a Motor To It managed to get the two-seater to hit a remarkable top speed of 163kph, or 101mph, in a less than leisurely ride in on a runway at Camden Aiport in Sydney.
Complete with a coffee table and fruit bowl, the brown leather couch broke the previous world record set by Englishman Marek Turowski in 2007.
Paul McKinnon, who constructed the contraption for an Australian drinks maker, added: "It’s the oddest vehicle we’ve ever built.
"With race cars, you can use the aerodynamic body kit but with the couch it was a matter of just doing what we could. We tried to break the airflow with the coffee table."
It's not the first time an Australian has fitted an engine to a household item, another motoring modifier recently put a motor on a model of his toilet.
