Can you name me some of the strangest phobias known in psychology? Better yet, do you have a rather strange phobia yourself? Can you imagine going through life being afraid of a tennis racket or other ordinary objects? Unfortunately, for some people this is reality. Most people that have phobias have fears of heights, the dark, insects or reptiles. But there are some people that develop strange phobias too. Psychologists tell us that most phobias are born from our childhood and usually involve a traumatic experience. This can be seen in the following example: Mark is four years old and is having a birthday party. The party is going well until a clown enters the room and some balloons pop. Mark gets very frightened by the loud sounds the balloons make when they pop. Mark’s brain therefore makes the connection that clowns are scary because of the balloons popping when the clown entered. Later in life, Mark continues to have this fear of clowns even though he has probably forgotten the balloon incident.
So, what are some of the strangest phobias that are known to psychology? Below is a list of some of the weirdest phobias that have been cataloged in the field. I will leave it up to your imagination to figure out how the people with these fears developed them in the first place
