Location of Sighting: Worcestershire, Cofton Hackett
Date of Sighting: August 1997
Time: Between Midnight and 1 am
Witness Name: Anon
Witness Statement: At about midnight my sister and I where walking the family dog in Cofton Park.
I had just released the dog of his lead and where heading from the wood up towards the footpath when my sister asked what the large bright light was.
I turned around and noticed a bright white light approaching from the East over the multi storey car park at the Rover car plant. I couldn’t tell exactly what altitude it was at but it was less that 1000 ft..
Birmingham International airport is to the east of Cofton and I assumed that it was a low flying aircraft, I said as much and carried on. After a few meters I noticed that my dog was looking in the direction of the light with a quizzical tilt to his head. I turned to my sister who asked why she couldn’t see and navigation lights. I agreed that I couldn’t see any. It’s at this point the light turned and head north towards Rubery. We carried on walking upto the path assuming it was a police helicopter but mused on why we couldn’t hear any noise of the engines or rotor’s.
We then noticed it had taken up a parallel course over what we assumed was the M5.
Having stopped on the path we noticed it had a definite shape. It was back lit by lights from Rubery/Frankley and looked some what like a lifting body aircraft, It had a flat bottom with a sharp pointed nose bulging in the middle and trailing to a flat point at the rear. Three points of light one to the front and two to the side and a row of fine lights along the central body bulge. We had started to discuss whether it was closer then thought as we could see it was rotating around its central vertical axis.
At this point we noticed that it appeared to be over Beacon Hill and was travelling along the Lickey Hills (On the Bromsgrove Side near the M42). When (from our vantage point) it had reached the end of the licked hills. The vehicle accelerated away, pitched up to about 30 degrees and took off at incredible speed. It appeared to produce a contrail and continued into a VERY high arch in the sky. Having flown model aircraft and model high power rockets it was definitely at a high altitude.
The whole incident took approximately 15 minutes. As far as I can remember there was no moon, no other air traffic. It was a clear sky with very little cloud, most of which was high level cloud.
