Layoffs Coming To Gerick's Work

(Before It's News)

My husband works in manufacturing. Granted, he does the paperwork for the engineering side of it, but still-! And as we all know, all our manufacturing jobs are going to China and other third world nations. The company he works for– I call it “Celestial”– is international, but essentially its a huge cartel buying up manufacturing companies in the United States and Europe and converting everything over for the Chinese to make much more cheaply. Which means that eventually, everyone working for Celestial in America and Europe will lose their jobs– except for the top brass sales and research/design guys.

That process will begin for the latest acquisitions to the company in Oregon and Massachusetts– NEXT WEEK. Every department must lay off. 2 to 3 out of every 5 people will be let go. They'll get 2 years of schooling ($25,000 worth or so) and unemployment the entire time since their job is being outsourced to China, but their chances of getting another job with pay that high and benefits is reduced every time they go through this process.

My husband will likely keep his job for the first round of layoffs between now and the end of the year, but its supposed to continue through March. He may not last that long. We'll see.

I'm so glad we prepared for this and didn't get over-confident. We're in a good position, especially since he will get 2 years of schooling and unemployment. I'll grab another part-time job to make up the difference while he's going to school, and between that and the managerial gig which gives us extra cheap rent we are totally okay.

I don't want him to lose his job just yet, though. I would rather he continued to get more experience at this new level of work plus keep the benefits, which we WILL lose once he's laid off. Life is scary and horrible without those benefits.

I'm wondering if there are any other companies who are at this point and getting ready to lay off. Could be we're in for a pretty harsh winter. A repeat of 2009 only worse? Don't know, but wouldn't surprise me.
