Valentine's Weekend

(Before It's News)

From Thursday through today Gerick has been spoiling me again for Valentine's Day. We don't normally do much on this day, since we're pagan and usually celebrate Beltane instead, but he pointed out that the Roman holiday of Lupercalia, which was like Valentine's Day combined with Carnivale or Mardi Gras– but still pagan!

It began when he came home and surprised me with a dozen red roses, a card, and tickets to see Fleetwood Mac in June! To say I was shocked is an understatement. Granted, Fleetwood Mac is HIS favorite band, not mine, but I love them too and we've always wanted to see them in concert together (he said the tickets were his Valentine's gift to himself too, ha ha!) He also brought my favorite wine and cheese! AND steaks and salmon for dinners. He took a 4-day weekend, and we planned a long drive and a trip to the zoo to get pics of animals and just get out of the house for a while.

So– yeah, I feel spoiled. =^D

We're not rolling in it or anything, but we've been careful and rarely indulge (other than tickets to Faerieworlds every year) so we can afford a few treats. However, I know Gerick wouldn't have spent that kind of money if he hadn't had a good bonus from his top rating at work for 2012. He was one of only 2 people in the entire Portland-area company who scored “exceeds expectations” on every measure. Since the money was a total bonus, it doesn't feel too wicked to splurge.

We even had a day of sunny 62 degree weather on Friday, which made that extra day off totally worth it. I spent the entire day outside. While Gerick took a long nap at one point (a must on any day off!) I called a friend I hadn't spoken to in months and we caught up and speculated about various and sundry for hours. I watched the sun set and felt relaxed and hopeful for spring.

The rest of the weekend was rain, rain, rain and in the 40s again, but that one warm day was very good for my Pacific Northwestern soul.
